Reef state and performance as indicators of cumulative impacts on coral reefs

چکیده

Coral bleaching, cyclones, outbreaks of crown-of-thorns seastar, and reduced water quality (WQ) threaten the health resilience coral reefs. The cumulative impacts from multiple acute chronic stressors on “reef State” (i.e., total cover) Performance” deviation expected rate cover increase) have rarely been assessed simultaneously, despite their management relevance. We evaluated dynamics (total per morphological groups) in Central Southern Great Barrier Reef over 25 years, identified compared main environmental drivers State Performance at reef level (i.e. based group. Using a combination metrics that consider both frequency magnitude lagged effects, we find correlate with differed those correlating Performance. Importantly, demonstrate WQ better predict than State. Coral Reefs on the Edge? Carbon Chemistry on Inshore Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef

While increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration alters global water chemistry (Ocean Acidification; OA), the degree of changes vary on local and regional spatial scales. Inshore fringing coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are subjected to a variety of local pressures, and some sites may already be marginal habitats for corals. The spatial and temporal variation in direc...

Artificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation

2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...

The condition of coral reefs in South Florida (2000) using Coral disease and bleaching as indicators.

The destruction of coral reef habitats has occurred at unprecedented levels during the last three decades. Coral disease and bleaching in the Caribbean and South Florida have caused extensive coral mortality with limited recovery, often coral reefs are being replaced with turf algae. Acroporids were once dominant corals and have diminished to the state where they are being considered as endange...

Responses of coral reefs and reef organisms to sedimentation

Unprecedented development along tropical shorelines is causing severe degradation of coral reefs primarily from increases in sedimentation. Sediment particles smother reef organisms and reduce light available for photosynthesis. Excessive sedmentation can adversely affect the structure and function of the coral reef ecosystem by altering both physical and biological processes. Mean sediment rat...

Shifting Baselines, Local Impacts, and Global Change on Coral Reefs

I magine trying to understand the ecology of tropical rainforests by studying environmental changes and interactions among the surviving plants and animals on a vast cattle ranch in the center of a deforested Amazon, without any basic data on how the forest worked before it was cleared and burned. The soil would be baked dry or eroded away and the amount of rainfall would be greatly decreased. ...
